James May
James May was born in Belfast in 1955. His latest series, the Coastal Studies are a collection of works painted over the last eighteen months. The paintings allowed a new subject to express and excite James’ creativity. The abstract shapes, textures, colours, layered with feeling, expression, and traces to evoke objects.
This self taught artist has painted all of his life; the catalyst being the gift of a watercolour set by his mother. Never finishing a picture in one sitting and rarely in the same month, this allows them to become little lives in themselves until James is fully satisfied with the outcome.
Many have used the coastal subject but for me it is my first visit; it created a new energy to work on. Hopefully they capture the vast depth of the sea juxtaposed by mans strange manufactured objects. Each painting to me is an individual and has its own personality, composed of countless fragments and infinite thought. The richness of this existence is hopefully beyond the obvious and lies among the mists of nuance. After all the years I see the essence of what I have to say coming out. The subject matter is a mere vehicle, a tease to start you on the search for what has gone on before.
James May has exhibited widely throughout Ireland. His work is found in both private and public exhibitions, such as the Arts Council and the BBC, London. In 1991 May was awarded the prestigious silver medal, chosen by the late Tom Carr, at the RUA, where he has often exhibited.
